International Academy (IA) Central’s Quiz Bowl team had its first event of the school year on Wednesday, November 16th. Team members competed at the Junior Varsity level against teams from University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy (UD) and Detroit Country Day School (DCDS). The competition was held at DCDS.
The IA team beat UD Brown 235-115, DCDS Middle School Gold 235-195, and DCDS Gold 365-165. Currently, IA is tied with UD Black, UD Gray, and UD White for first place; all four schools have not yet lost a game. In terms of the points-per-game score, which only matters in a tiebreaker situation, IA’s team is in third place to UD Black and UD Gray.
The next competition in the League is on Wednesday, December 7th, and will be held at Mercy High School. The IA team prepares diligently, holding weekly meetings and having team specializations. Under Mr. Morrison’s coaching, the team expects to perform excellently at the next competition as well.
IA is part of a Quiz Bowl league that will hold competitions monthly from November 2016 to February 2017, with a final tournament on February 28th, 2017. The other schools participating in the league are the previously mentioned UD, DCDS, and Mercy High School, as well as Thurston High School, Farmington High School, Brother Rice High School, and Frankel Jewish Academy, many of which have multiple teams.
The Quiz Bowl team looks forward to a competitive future. “We have been working really hard and we are getting better,” says Runik Mehrotra, who captains the team. The season thus far has been a success, and with enough members, IA may in coming years have multiple teams to compete in both Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions.
